Zip merging and Changing lanes

Zip merging:

When a road has no lane markings and narrows so that two lines of traffic become one, you must give way to any vehicle that has any part ahead of yours. This is known as zip merging.

Note: If you cross marked lines on the road, it is not zip merging, it is considered a lane change, and different rules apply.

Changing lanes:

When moving from one marked lane (or line of traffic) to another, you must give way to all vehicles already in that lane. This also applies when crossing broken lines that indicate a lane is ending, such as when merging into freeway traffic.

  • Always use your indicators and perform a head check when zip merging or changing lanes.
