Making turns at roundabouts:

A roundabout is a special type of intersection with its own rules. When entering, you must give way to all vehicles already in the roundabout, as well as any trams entering or approaching it. Be especially careful to watch for motorcycles and bicycles, as they can be harder to see.

In the diagram above, the red B vehicles must give way to the green A vehicles. Enter only when there is a safe gap in the traffic.

At roundabouts, follow these guidelines:

  • Turning left

Use the left lane when approaching and stay in that lane. Signal left as you approach and keep the indicator on until you exit.

  • Going straight ahead

You can approach in either the left or right lane, but remain in the same lane while travelling through. Do not signal when entering, but if practical, signal left as you exit.

  • Turning right:

Approach in the right lane and keep close to the centre of the roundabout. Signal right on approach, then signal left just before your exit (if practical), and keep it on until you leave.

Always follow any directional arrows marked on the road within or before the roundabout.
